Antes de Band Aid Bob, Live Aid Bob y Global Treasure Bob, hubo, y siempre habrá, Bobby Boomtown. Como líder de The Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof llevó a su banda de new-wave de Dublín a la cima de las listas de éxitos del Reino Unido. Pero antes de ese power-pop perfecto, había algo crudo y muy sucio.
 
Es increíble pensar que en Halloween de 2025, The Boomtown Rats -Geldof, Pete Briquette y Simon Crowe, y durante mucho tiempo con Garry Roberts, Johnny Fingers y Gerry Cott- habrán estado juntos durante 50 años. Originalmente titulados The Nightlife Thugs, tomaron su nombre de la novela de Woody Guthrie Bound for Glory y dieron su primer concierto el 31 de octubre de 1975 en el campus de Bolton Street en Dublín. Un año de celebraciones ha comenzado con una aparición en Hootenanny de Jools Holland, una nueva colección de éxitos dobles, The First 50 Years: Songs Of Boomtown Glory que saldrá en septiembre y una gira nacional en septiembre/octubre de 2025.
Pero Dawn Of The Rats nos lleva de vuelta. Por primera vez en vinilo, se puede escuchar su demo en vivo de esta época. Fue la grabación la que finalmente llegó a los escritorios de Nigel Grainge y Chris Hill en Ensign Records cuando el grupo se trasladó al Reino Unido en octubre del año siguiente. Las cuatro pistas se complementan con una actuación en vivo en el Moran's Hotel, justo al lado de O'Connell Street de Dublín; Barefootin' de Robert Parker se presenta con una energía estridente que hace un guiño tanto a los Stooges como a Dr. Feelgood. As the leader of The Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof led his band of Dublin new-wavers right to the very top of the UK charts. But before that perfect power-pop, there was something raw and very dirty.

For the first time on vinyl, their live demo tapes from 1975-1979 are heard. It was the recording that finally found its way to the desks of Nigel Grainge and Chris Hill at Ensign Records when the group relocated to the UK in October the following year. The four tracks are complimented with a live performance at Moran's Hotel, just off Dublin’s O’Connell Street; Robert Parker's Barefootin' is delivered with a raucous energy that nods to both the Stooges and Dr Feelgood. The collection is rounded out with a selection of B-sides, many of which have never appeared on CD or LP. These have been much sought-after by fans over the years.

On lurid sewer-like transparent green vinyl, hear The Boomtown Rats as they were first heard. Edgy, dangerous, spiky and fast.
